Cookie Policy (EU)
In this story
Updated: 15 October 2026. This notice covers cookies and similar browser storage on the static public Karl.Fail website.
What the website stores
The static website does not set advertising or analytics cookies. It does not load the former WordPress, Complianz, Gravatar or Matomo integrations for readers. Cookies left over from an earlier version of the website can be removed through your browser’s site-data settings.
Light and dark appearance
Initially, the website uses your device’s colour-scheme preference without saving a selection. When you explicitly choose light or dark mode, that choice is saved in this website’s localStorage under karl-theme on your device. Unlike a cookie, localStorage is not automatically attached to HTTP requests. The preference remains until you reset it or clear site data; it is used only to provide your requested appearance.
Choose the system appearance option to remove the saved theme choice. You can also delete this website’s localStorage through your browser’s site-data settings. Reading remains available with browser storage blocked, but a chosen appearance may not survive a new visit.
Remembering the notice
When you dismiss the storage notice, sessionStorage stores karl-cookie-notice so the notice stays dismissed in the current browser tab. This value is not sent to the server and is normally removed when the tab’s session ends. The separate “Cookie notice” button in the footer reopens the notice; the Cookies link opens this policy. Dismissal does not authorise any tracking.
Cloudflare security cookies
Depending on the security features applied to a request, Cloudflare may set cookies to recognise a completed security challenge or protect against automated abuse. These are separate from analytics and advertising. Cloudflare documents feature-dependent names, purposes and lifetimes in its cookie reference; the presence of a documented cookie there does not mean this website sets it on every visit.
Notice and consent
The frontend notice explains these practices; dismissing it is not consent to tracking. There are no optional tracking categories to accept. Under Section 25(2) TDDDG, consent is not required for storage or access strictly necessary to provide a digital service you expressly request. We use the saved appearance solely for your explicit theme selection. Any security-cookie exemption depends on its actual necessity, not merely on its provider calling it essential.
If optional tracking is introduced, it must remain disabled until any legally required consent has been obtained, with an equally accessible way to refuse and withdraw consent.
Control and contact
Your browser lets you inspect, block and remove cookies and local storage. Blocking security cookies can cause a challenge to repeat or access to fail. For personal-data processing and your rights, read the Privacy Policy.
